There is one essential role that only you can fulfill: decision-making.
The participants:
- You: The leader, the decision maker
- AI: The team member, the Brain Trust
If you're a novice user of AI tools, you might be prone to a common pitfall: surrendering control to AI too readily. You might find yourself rapidly scanning responses and hastily inputting the next prompt, sometimes even before fully comprehending the previous responses. This is a manifestation of our innate human propensity for seeking information. However, this approach often leads to frustration, as you may reach a point where you've gained nothing substantial from the interaction.
Even if you're not fully capitulating to AI, if you relinquish too much control, you might occasionally receive a suitable answer (though not frequently), but you lose the opportunity for more extensive, long-term outcomes. This is the key downside to this mistake.
Many people fall into this trap, including myself in my early days.
But fear not, this hurdle is not insurmountable. The solution lies in a simple shift in mindset: You should lead, at least at some level, and not let AI entirely take the reins.
When you adopt this mindset, you start seeing things from a broader perspective, and your AI companion begins delivering outcomes that are a cut above.
Here's a small tip that might help: Pause for at least 30 seconds before inputting the next prompt. This allows you time to fully digest the previous response from the AI. If possible, standing up and taking a short walk, even if it's only for a minute or two, can be beneficial, especially when you sense that you're falling into a frantic pace that you can't control.
Remember, taking a "break" or creating a "space" is your secret weapon.
Don't give in so easily. Take the lead.
